Overview: The New Course at The Royal Selangor Golf Club brings 18 holes of par-72 parkland golf to the centre of Kuala Lumpur. It measures 6,897 yards from the back tees and uses the club’s established urban setting of mature trees, compact movement and views toward the city. The New is the shorter of RSGC’s two championship courses, but its generous fairways do not remove the need for careful positioning: the restored design places emphasis on approach angles, shaped greens and the way tree-lined corridors frame the next shot. It is a historic-city course with a modern strategic layer.
History: Royal Selangor’s golf story begins in 1893, while the club’s present site was developed in the early 1920s. The first nine of the Old Course was ready in 1921, the second nine followed in 1922, and a third nine that became the basis of the New Course was brought into play in 1924. Nelson & Haworth later undertook a major renovation of both championship courses, retaining much of the traditional routing while improving turf, drainage, bunkering and strategy. Their course record lists the current New Course as opened in 2008, which is best understood as the post-renovation version.
Did You Know? The New Course is part of RSGC’s tournament identity as well as its everyday golf. Nelson & Haworth record that the club’s composite routing was selected for the 2016 Maybank Championship, which means the championship presentation can draw on holes from both 18-hole courses. The New is also the shorter of the pair, with the course record giving it 6,897 yards and describing generous fairways alongside undulating greens.
