Overview: Greenwich's Round Hill Club presents an 18-hole Walter Travis routing through varied Connecticut topography. The current directory records par 71 and 6,715 yards. Varied topography, undulating fairways and broad, carefully shaped greens give the course a strategic character despite its modest length. Water enters decisively at the 11th, while the rest of the routing asks golfers to manage angles and slopes rather than simply chase distance. It is a course that rewards a controlled plan from the tee and an accurate read of the ground around the green.
History: The club was established in the early 1920s, and Walter Travis laid out the course in 1922 before the club's 18-hole layout opened in 1924. Emilio Strazza, the long-serving greenkeeper, received substantial credit for shaping and maintaining the putting surfaces. Robert Trent Jones worked on the course in the mid-1960s, including the par-three 11th, and later restoration work has aimed to preserve Travis's design philosophy while improving the course for current play.
Did You Know? The 11th is a 178-yard par three played across a pond. Golf Digest identifies it as the clearest signature of Robert Trent Jones's work at Round Hill, while the surrounding course remains recognizably Travis in its strategic greens and varied landform.
