Overview: The River Club Golf Course is an 18-hole private parkland layout in Sandton, Johannesburg, shaped by tree-lined fairways, gently undulating ground and the Braamfontein Spruit. Bob Grimsdell designed the course on land that was well suited to golf but presented difficult rocky soil, and the routing responds with a varied sequence of slopes, water crossings and green approaches. The urban setting is surprisingly secluded: mature trees and the spruit create a continuous natural framework around the holes.
History: Punch Barlow incorporated The River Club in 1966 with the aim of creating a small private golf club. The course and original clubhouse opened in 1968, and the club’s official history records its first Members Open in December of that year. Grimsdell’s original design remains largely unchanged according to the club. Later course references credit Rob O’Friel with a 1998 upgrade, while the underlying routing and its relationship with the Braamfontein Spruit remain central to the course’s identity.
Did You Know? The Braamfontein Spruit is not merely a scenic boundary at The River Club. It runs through the property and becomes part of the golf strategy, helping shape water features and the visual rhythm of several holes. The site therefore joins a carefully maintained parkland course to a living urban water corridor, an unusual combination for a private Johannesburg layout.
