Overview: The Quarry Golf Club is one of San Antonio’s most distinctive public golf experiences because the course occupies a former limestone quarry. Keith Foster’s 18-hole, par-71 layout measures about 6,940 yards from the back tees and moves from more conventional opening holes into the dramatic quarry walls on the back nine. The rock faces are not a decorative backdrop added after the design: they are the physical edge of the old excavation, creating unusual scale and sightlines around the greens. The course still asks for ordinary golfing disciplines, choosing the right club, finding a reliable landing zone and controlling approaches, but the setting gives those decisions a character that is hard to reproduce on a flat municipal or resort site.
History: Limestone was discovered on the land in the late nineteenth century, and the Alamo Portland and Roman Cement Company opened a major quarry there in 1908. The company town of Cementville grew around the industrial operation, with homes, a school, church and community facilities. After the cement plant and town declined, the quarry was not simply filled in. Developers reimagined the excavated ground as a golf course, and Quarry Golf opened in 1993. The present course therefore carries both industrial history and modern golf history in the same landscape.
Did You Know? The operator describes Quarry Golf as a living piece of San Antonio history, and its ecology is part of the identity of the former industrial site. A round can move from ordinary parkland holes to towering limestone walls and native wildlife without leaving the city. The course was also renovated in 2024 with Tif 3D ultra-dwarf greens, so the current playing surfaces are part of an ongoing course story rather than a museum piece.
