Overview: The Powelton Club is a private Hudson Valley course in Balmville, just north of Newburgh, New York. Its compact par-70 routing follows the gentle slope above the Hudson River, using trees, modest elevation, and small targets to reward controlled placement. The course is short by modern standards but has a clear old-club sense of scale.
History: The club was established in 1882, but the present golf course has a later and more precise date. Devereux Emmet was hired in 1921 to design a new course, and the new 18 holes officially opened in May 1926. Route I-84 later required changes to the course and irrigation system.
Did You Know? The sixth hole is named Emmet after the course architect. Its narrow green, deep front bunkers, and demand for a carefully placed tee shot make the hole a small architectural reminder of the designer behind the full routing.
