Overview: The Marshes is an 18-hole championship course beside Brookstreet in Ottawa’s Kanata district, routed through hardwood forest, meadow and wetland. The official scorecard lists par 72 and 7,026 yards from the gold tees, with shorter tee sets that make the same strategic questions more manageable. The layout has an unusual balance of six par 3s, six par 4s and six par 5s. Water, marsh edges, streams and deep bunkering make position important, while the opening holes move through woodland before the back nine brings more wetland into play.
History: The course is described by its operator as a final design collaboration between Robert Trent Jones Sr. and Robert Trent Jones Jr. The club’s public history dates its operating story to 2002. From the beginning, the design brief was to preserve the site’s natural character while creating a championship course, and the property has since hosted five PGA of Canada Senior Championships as well as provincial and local amateur events. The Marshes now sits within a wider Brookstreet destination that combines public golf, hotel accommodation and event facilities.
Did You Know? The ninth and eighteenth holes share a putting surface measuring about 30,000 square feet, an unusual feature that links the start and finish of the two nines. The club also holds Audubon Cooperative Wildlife Sanctuary status, so the marshes and naturalised areas are not just hazards in the playing strategy; they are part of the property’s environmental management story.
