Overview: The Killara Golf Club is a private 18-hole parkland course on Sydney's North Shore. The heritage study records a par 72 layout of about 6,080 metres, or approximately 6,653 yards. Mature trees, native woodland, changing ground and a compact property make position important. Recent renovation work by Harley Kruse rebuilt bunkers, tees and greens and reversed the direction of some holes, giving the course a more sustainable and strategically varied expression while preserving its established setting.
History: Killara began in 1899 as the Lindfield Golf and Recreation Club, with a rough nine-hole course cut from Archbold's Paddock. The club moved to its present land, became the Killara Golf Club in 1904 and developed the course with substantial member effort. Prosper Ellis shaped the important 1965 design, Commander John Harris was involved in validating the plans, and the modern renovation by Kruse has carried that long design history forward.
Did You Know? The club says it was the first golf club in Australia to own its own land. Early golfers even used sheep to keep vegetation under control while the course was being established. That small detail captures the practical, hands-on origin of a venue whose present woodland character is still shaped by the land and the careful rebuilding of its playing corridors.
