Overview: The Highlands of Elgin is a public course built across rolling Illinois ground and the former Elgin stone-quarry landscape. The 18-hole layout measures 6,961 yards at par 72, combining wooded terrain, open fairways and quarry lakes. Keith Foster and Art Schaupeter shaped a course whose changing elevation and exposed rock give it more physical drama than a typical municipal layout.
History: The property’s original nine holes date from the earlier course, while construction of the expanded 18-hole layout began in 2001 and the complete course was finished in 2010. The city’s planning record and the club’s course information distinguish the quarry expansion from the earlier nine-hole course.
Did You Know? Nine of the newer holes reclaim a former stone quarry, including holes that run along the top of a bluff 30 to 40 feet above a 12-acre quarry lake.
