Overview: The Ashford Course at The Greenbrier is a nine-hole, walking-only par-3 loop at The Greenbrier Sporting Club. Its holes range from 56 to 112 yards and are built around short-game decisions rather than full-length driving. The layout uses parkland surroundings, compact green complexes and classic architectural ideas to create a useful round for beginners while still giving experienced players a concentrated test of distance control and recovery. It is deliberately smaller in scale than the resort’s championship courses and more focused on learning, practice and variety.
History: The Ashford Short Course opened in August 2018 as the newest addition to The Greenbrier’s golf offering. The name honors Colonel Bailey K. Ashford, whose hospital operated at the resort during the Second World War. The course’s design pays tribute to historic golf architecture, using template ideas associated with architects such as C.B. Macdonald and Seth Raynor in a compact West Virginia setting.
Did You Know? The eighth hole is a Redan, a template originally associated with North Berwick, while the ninth is a version of the Papa hole from Myopia Hunt Club. Those references make the Ashford loop a small architectural study, with recognizable strategic ideas compressed into a nine-hole par-3 course.
