Overview: The South Course at The Club at Sonterra is the second 18-hole routing in the private San Antonio facility. Bruce Devlin and Robert von Hagge are credited with the design, and current course records describe a par-72 layout with a published back-tee length of 6,359 yards. Compared with the longer North Course, South is a more compact regulation test, but compact does not mean featureless. The routing uses tree lines, bunkers and changing approach angles to make position matter, and the club’s North Central Corridor setting gives the holes a distinctly wooded San Antonio character.
History: The South Course is recorded as having been built in 1985 and forms part of Sonterra’s 36-hole golf operation. It is important to preserve the South name in the directory because the two courses share a clubhouse, address and membership structure while representing different routings. Devlin and von Hagge’s work is documented for both named courses, but the South has its own scorecard and its own playing rhythm. It should therefore be written as an individual course rather than a generic description of Sonterra.
Did You Know? The South is commonly described as the shorter of the two Sonterra layouts, yet its par-72 card still leaves room for a full regulation round. The course’s interest comes from how quickly a hole can change after the drive: a safe-looking fairway can leave a poor angle, while a more demanding line can open the green. That small-scale strategic contrast is what gives the South its own identity inside the larger club.
