Overview: The North Course at The Club at Sonterra is an 18-hole private layout in San Antonio’s North Central Corridor. Bruce Devlin and Robert von Hagge designed a parkland course that uses broad fairways, mature oaks, bunkers and ponds to make the preferred line more important than the raw scorecard distance. From the longest published tee it measures 7,070 yards and plays to par 72. The North is the more open and tree-framed of Sonterra’s two named routings, with several holes asking the player to choose between a generous landing area and a better angle toward a green protected by water or sand.
History: Sonterra is a 36-hole private golf facility, and the North Course should not be collapsed into the separate South Course in a directory. The club’s course identity is associated with Devlin and von Hagge, while San Antonio golf material describes the North as a relatively flat routing lined by large oaks. Those trees are not just scenery: they form the visual and strategic framework of the course. The club’s private model and two-course structure have made Sonterra a significant part of the city’s north-side golf landscape.
Did You Know? The ninth hole is described in course notes as a long par four that turns around bunkers and then crosses toward a pond at the green. It is a compact example of the North Course’s design language: the tee shot can look generous, but the approach becomes much more exact when the player has chosen the wrong side of the fairway. The surrounding oaks also make the same hole feel different as the season and wind direction change.
