Overview: Old Hawthorne is an 18-hole private course in Columbia, built across the rolling ground of a former horse farm. Arthur Schaupeter’s design uses broad fairways, bentgrass greens and the scale of a championship layout, with tournament tees reaching 7,221 yards. The course’s residential setting is softened by the large property and the mature wooded corridors around the holes.
History: The club opened in 2007 on land formerly associated with the Harold “Eutsey” Johnson family horse farm. Arthur Schaupeter designed the course, and the University of Missouri made it the home course for its men’s and women’s golf teams from the opening period. The clubhouse also incorporates a 1938 replica of Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage.
Did You Know? Old Hawthorne’s relationship with Mizzou extends beyond a tee-time partnership: the facility includes the Walsworth Family Golf Center, with practice and team-support spaces used by the university programs. That collegiate connection gives the private club an unusually visible tournament role.
