Overview: The Clarens Golf Estate has an 18-hole mountain course in the eastern Free State, set beneath the Maluti range and close to Golden Gate Highlands National Park. The routing follows a landscape of streams, dams, open grass and changing mountain views, with Kikuyu fairways and bent-grass greens providing a clear playing contrast between the natural land and the maintained surfaces. Risk-and-reward choices are part of the course’s identity.
History: The course was developed as the golfing centre of the Clarens estate and as part of the town’s wider rise as an art, food and outdoor destination. Rather than isolate the fairways from the scenery, the estate’s design uses the valley, watercourses and mountain views as the main experience. The course now sits within a broader tourism landscape that includes hiking, cultural attractions and the distinctive sandstone town of Clarens.
Did You Know? Wildlife around the estate includes birds and antelope such as springbok and impala. That makes a round at Clarens feel closer to a mountain nature experience than a conventional urban golf outing, especially when the Maluti range is clear beyond the fairways.
