Overview: The Championship Golf Course at the University of New Mexico gives Albuquerque a long, strategic desert layout with wide playing corridors, substantial bunkering and views toward the Sandia Mountains. Robert Lawrence, known as Red Lawrence, shaped the course around the mesa’s natural movement rather than treating the site as a flat template. At 7,555 yards from the back tees, it can host serious competition, yet the broad fairways and multiple angles into the greens give ordinary rounds room for different strategies. The landscape is open and sunlit, but the design has enough contour and target definition to keep every hole purposeful.
History: The current Championship Course officially opened in 1967 and quickly became an important collegiate and championship venue. It has hosted NCAA men’s championships in 1976, 1992 and 1998, NCAA women’s championships in 1987 and 2008, along with major university, conference and qualifying events. The William H. Tucker Invitational has also made the course a long-running fixture on the collegiate calendar, linking the university course to generations of competitive golf.
Did You Know? The William H. Tucker Invitational has been played at UNM for more than four decades, giving the course an unusually deep connection to college golf. The property has also hosted PGA Tour qualifying events, so its identity is not limited to university competition. It is one of those public layouts whose tournament history is matched by a practical, playable everyday routing.
