Overview: The Berkshire Red is an 18-hole heathland course at Ascot, set among pine, heather and rolling ground on the Crown Estate. Herbert Fowler's design uses the natural slopes and sandy heath to create a strategic course with a distinctive six-six-six balance: six par 3s, six par 4s and six par 5s. The firm ground and varied green sites make club selection as important as length.
History: The Berkshire Golf Club was founded in 1928, with Herbert Fowler designing both the Red and Blue courses across the heathland site. The Red course has remained the senior routing of the pair, and the club's history is tied to the preservation of Fowler's naturalistic treatment of pine, heather and gorse rather than large-scale earthworks.
Did You Know? The Red course's six par 3s, six par 4s and six par 5s once made it the only course in Britain with that exact configuration. The distinction ended when The Shire opened in 2007 with the same six-six-six pattern.
