Overview: Thai Country Club’s 18-hole routing plays to par 72 and extends to 7,097 yards in Chachoengsao, east of Bangkok. Denis Griffiths designed the course to United States Golf Association specifications, creating a polished parkland layout with broad fairways, abundant water, mature planting and a varied sequence of holes. The visual impression is calm and highly maintained, but the design keeps asking for disciplined lines into the greens. Its combination of tournament scale and everyday playability has made it one of Thailand’s most established courses.
History: The club opened to the golfing world in December 1996 and entered the international spotlight almost immediately. The 1997 Asian Honda Classic was the first major test of the new course, and Tiger Woods won the event. Thai Country Club later hosted further professional tournaments, including the Volvo Masters of Asia and Thailand Open, giving Griffiths’ design a long record as a serious competition venue as well as a refined club course.
Did You Know? A plaque beside the tenth tee marks the line of Tiger Woods’ famous shot during the 1997 Asian Honda Classic, and a locker associated with him is displayed inside the club. The course is also planted with paspalum brought from Hawaii, a detail that helps explain the strong green colour and consistent playing surfaces often noted in descriptions of Thai Country Club.
