Overview: The Dunas Course at Terras da Comporta, located on a pristine stretch of coastline south of Lisbon, Portugal, is a breathtaking modern links designed by David McLay Kidd. Set within a massive pine forest on exceptionally sandy soil, the course features sprawling, rugged sand dunes, expansive fescue fairways, and massive, wild bunkers. The layout encourages a traditional ground game, offering wide landing areas that reward strategic positioning and creative shot-making to navigate the ocean breezes and undulating green complexes.
History: The development of Terras da Comporta was a lengthy and dramatic saga, originally initiated in the late 2000s but stalled for over a decade due to financial and planning crises. David McLay Kidd was brought back to complete his unfinished routing, and upon its grand opening in 2023, the course immediately received universal critical acclaim, being hailed as one of the most important new course openings in Europe of the 21st century.
Did You Know? The sand on which the course is built is so deep and pure that during construction, no topsoil was imported; instead, Kidd and his team shaped the fairways directly into the native white sand. The course features stunning long-range views of the Sado Estuary, providing a visual experience that perfectly matches the world-class quality of its strategic design.
