Overview: Fable Terrace Downs offers an 18-hole par-72 test on river terraces above the Rakaia Gorge in Canterbury’s high country. The front nine has a more sheltered woodland feel, while the back nine opens into an alpine-links landscape with larger views and stronger wind. Sid Puddicombe and Associates used the natural terrain, lakes, river crossings and bunkers to create a resort round that changes character at the turn rather than repeating one visual idea.
History: The course opened in 1999 as the centrepiece of Terrace Downs Resort, about an hour from Christchurch and near the high-country routes toward Mt Hutt. David Cox and the Terrace Downs team were involved in the project, with Sid Puddicombe contributing to the architecture. The course has since been marketed as a destination combining golf, accommodation, high-country produce and outdoor activities.
Did You Know? The 16th is a signature par three played above the Rakaia River, with the gorge and Southern Alps below the line of play. The setting is so open that wind and visual scale can alter club selection even when the measured distance seems familiar.
