Overview: Tatanka Golf Club is a public Paul Albanese design in Niobrara, developed in partnership with the Santee Sioux Nation. The 18-hole, par-72 course reaches 7,450 yards and occupies rolling ridges and bold prairie ground with long views across northeast Nebraska. Albanese used the existing elevation and native landscape to create a links-style layout that alternates broad open lines with pronounced slopes, natural features and wind-exposed approaches. The scale is substantial, but the course's visual identity comes from the land rather than from a manufactured set of hazards.
History: Tatanka was developed as a golf project for the Santee Sioux Nation and was scheduled to open in 2015. During planning and construction, Paul Albanese described the site as one of the most interesting pieces of property he had worked with, noting its rolling hills, ridges and unusually long views. The course brought a new destination-style golf facility to the Niobrara region while connecting the design to the land and the history of the Santee community.
Did You Know? Tatanka is a Dakota word for buffalo. The name connects the golf course to the cultural history of the region and the buffalo that once shaped the Great Plains, while the course itself uses the open ridges and grassland that remain characteristic of northeast Nebraska.
