Overview: Tasmania Golf Club is an 18-hole coastal parkland course at Cambridge, just beyond Hobart Airport, set on a headland above Barilla Bay and Pittwater. The current course page lists par 72 and 6,214 metres, approximately 6,795 yards, with native bushland, tree-lined fairways, strategic bunkering and exposed ground where wind can alter the preferred line. The setting is central to the design: water appears on three sides of the headland, while views extend toward Five Mile Beach, the Coal River Valley and kunanyi/Mount Wellington.
History: Lindisfarne Golf Club was formed in 1925 on Hobart’s eastern shore, but post-war development eventually forced the club to find a new site. The present Barilla Bay property was acquired in 1968, and course architect Al Howard designed the new layout with construction support from superintendent Ian Grimsey. Tasmania Golf Club was officially opened on 16 January 1971. The routing has continued to evolve: a 2023 road project led to the front and back nines being flipped and holes renumbered, while later work has included reconstruction of the 17th.
Did You Know? The signature 12th hole, originally numbered the 3rd, is a par five that follows the natural curve of Barilla Bay. The club compares its long view and demanding sequence of drive, second shot and approach with the famous 18th at Pebble Beach. Its identity comes from the shoreline itself, not from a decorative water feature added beside the hole.
