Overview: Tandridge is a bold Surrey course whose character changes noticeably between its two nines. The front nine crosses relatively gentle ground, while the back nine rises into more dramatic terrain with broad views towards the North Downs and the High Weald. Harry Colt’s routing uses the natural contours, plateau greens and diagonal bunkering to make approach angles and recovery decisions as important as distance.
History: Colt designed Tandridge in the early 1920s and the course opened for general play in 1924. The first layout contained more than 300 bunkers and the original clubhouse was rebuilt after a 1927 fire. In the modern era, Frank Pont’s restoration plan and later work by Tim Lobb have sought to recover lost strategic features while adapting the course to contemporary play.
Did You Know? A 1925 exhibition match at Tandridge paired Harry Vardon and Alex Herd against the club’s professional Alf Baker and Ted Ray. The club’s early history also records visits from Winston Churchill, Jack Hobbs and RAF pilot Douglas Bader.
