Overview: Tanah Merah Country Club’s Garden Course is an 18-hole, par-71 layout on Singapore’s eastern coast, close to Changi Airport but shaped to feel like a garden landscape rather than an airport corridor. The current official back-tee reference is 5,706 metres, or about 6,241 yards. Robert Trent Jones II’s 2019 redevelopment uses broad banks, shaped greens, water and strategic sand to make shot shape and landing angle important. The course is not defined by sheer length; its interest comes from the way apparently generous holes narrow around the green and reward a carefully chosen approach.
History: The Garden Course opened in 1984 and has carried the name of Tanah Merah through several design phases. Its current identity was established by the major 2019 redevelopment led by Robert Trent Jones II, which recast the layout while retaining the club’s garden-paradise theme. Tanah Merah’s wider history includes the Singapore Open, Johnnie Walker Classic, Tiger Skins, Lexus Cup and HSBC Women’s Champions, giving the course a long connection to high-level golf in Asia.
Did You Know? The 14th is an island-green par three reimagined in the current design, while the 6th is the only bunkerless par four on the course. Those two holes show the Garden’s contrasting architectural ideas: one concentrates the player’s attention around a precise water carry, while the other makes the green complex and the ground around it do the defensive work. The result is a course that can look serene while asking very exacting questions.
