Overview: Talking Rock Ranch is a private course of 18 holes, playing to par 72 in Prescott’s high-desert landscape, designed by Jay Morrish. Rolling hills, native flora and broad changes in elevation give the routing a western Arizona identity, while multiple tee positions let the same hole present different decisions from one set to another. The long championship layout is part of a larger ranch-style community, but the course was planned around the land’s natural shape rather than cleared into a uniform grid.
History: Talking Rock was developed at the start of the 2000s, with contemporary coverage describing the ranch course as opening in 2002. Morrish recalled that the owners gave the design team a large property and asked them to place the course where it made the most sense. The resulting routing uses the site’s rolling ground and preserves more than a third of the property as open space. The course and community were developed with the stated aim of allowing homes and golf to coexist with the native environment.
Did You Know? During construction, Native Resources International salvaged approximately 150 native trees from areas affected by the course and roadway work, then replanted them on the site. That detail is a useful key to the design philosophy: Talking Rock’s high-desert character is not a decorative theme added after construction, but part of a deliberate attempt to retain and restore native landscape. The course’s name also reflects the ranch setting around Prescott rather than a coastal or resort identity.
