Overview: Gray Bear at Tále Golf Club is an 18-hole mountain course in Horná Lehota, set among the spruce forests and rocky terrain of the Low Tatras. Bob Walton and Skip Malek shaped the routing around the natural contours, streams, boulders and changes in elevation rather than treating the setting as scenery alone. The official club material records an opening on 8 August 2002, par 71 and a maximum length of 6,296 metres, which is approximately 6,885 yards. Fairways can appear generous from the tee, yet the woodland edges, moving water and uneven ground make placement important before the approach. Gray Bear is a course where the mountain setting remains part of the playing strategy from the first hole to the last.
History: Gray Bear has a special place in Slovak golf as the country’s first regulation 18-hole resort course. The opening in 2002 was marked by the arrival of a championship layout in the Low Tatras, and the course soon became a stage for important national and international events. Tále’s own history records the Slovak Championship in 2003, the European Masters Senior tournament in 2006, and Ladies Slovak Open events in 2010 and 2011. Those tournaments helped establish the course as more than a scenic mountain facility. Its identity is tied to the combination of Slovak golf history, a demanding natural site and a resort setting that continues to include the separate Little Bear short course.
Did You Know? The sixth hole is remembered for the stream that crosses its playing corridor, one of several places where the course’s water system becomes an architectural feature. Gray Bear also has the separate Little Bear short course, so the bear theme extends beyond the championship routing. The contrast between the long mountain holes and the compact short-course holes gives the Tále resort two distinct ways to experience its terrain.
