Overview: Takapuna Golf Course is Auckland’s high-volume public course beside the motorway in Hillcrest. The current operator describes a full 18-hole round to par 71, with easy access, a large driving range and a layout designed to welcome beginners, regular club players and golfers fitting a round into a city stay. The ground is relatively open, but water, trees and the need to keep a steady rhythm make the course more than a simple municipal loop.
History: Golf has been part of the North Shore sporting landscape for more than a century. The present public course has operated under its current stewardship since 2001, after the site’s earlier club and council history shaped the property. Takapuna became one of New Zealand’s busiest golf facilities, and recent flood-management and lease discussions have placed its long-term 18-hole arrangement in the public eye.
Did You Know? The course handles more than 80,000 rounds a year according to the operator, making it one of the most played public courses in the country. Its large driving range is a separate part of the property and attracts substantial use even when golfers are not playing the 18 holes.
