Overview: At Sunningdale Golf Club (New), the heathland profile for Sunningdale Golf Club (New) is listed at 6729 yards and par 70. Harry Colt created a course with narrower winding fairways, fewer formal lines and small, often raised greens that demand exact approach play. The New is more rugged in appearance than its older sibling, and its heather corridors can make a missed fairway costly. It is a course of rhythm and restraint: a player who finds the right side of the fairway can use the ground, while a poor angle leaves a much more complicated recovery.
History: The land began as a nine-hole course known as Sunningdale Heath in 1911. After the First World War, Sunningdale took over the ground and commissioned Colt to extend it to 18 holes; the New Course opened on 10 November 1923. Tom Simpson replaced several original holes in 1934, and Colt and Morrison reassessed the routing in 1939, creating the form that has endured. The course later shared international final qualifying duties with the Old Course and has long been regarded as one of Britain’s leading inland tests.
Did You Know? The New Course was created partly to relieve pressure on the Old Course as play increased after the First World War. It began as an independent nine-hole layout before becoming the second full course at Sunningdale.
