Overview: Sugarbush Resort Golf Club is an 18-hole Robert Trent Jones Sr. course in Warren’s Mad River Valley, set among the Green Mountains and designed around the natural mountain setting. The layout uses uphill and downhill movement, wooded hillsides, streams and broad valley views to create a round with changing visual scale. At par 70 and roughly 6,300 yards, it is not defined by length alone. The course asks players to manage slopes, choose the right side of a fairway and account for approaches that can play differently from the card.
History: The project was commissioned in 1961 by the owners of Sugarbush Inn, who asked Jones to transform mountainside acreage into an 18-hole course. The first golf stage was a nine-hole opening in 1963, and the current full 18-hole routing was built in 1965. That chronology separates the original commission and early golf activity from the completed course represented by today’s scorecard.
Did You Know? Sugarbush’s own course tour describes the design as a layout where each hole presents a difficult par while keeping a conservative bogey in play. The property also uses different par references for its scorecard: the champion layout is par 70 for men, while the green layout is listed as par 72 for women.
