Overview: Subic International Golf Club occupies the forested Binictican Valley inside the Subic Bay Freeport Zone. The current tourism guide lists an 18-hole championship course at par 72 and 7,100 yards, with Desmond Muirhead credited for the expanded design. Tropical forest, water sources and changing terrain are central to the experience. The routing is not just a flat resort card: its fairways and greens ask for imagination, controlled placement and the ability to adapt when the surrounding landscape changes the angle of play.
History: The property began in the early 1960s as Binictican Valley Golf Club, a nine-hole recreation facility during the period when Subic was a US Naval Base. After the base closed in 1991, local volunteers helped keep the neglected property alive during the transition to the Subic Bay Freeport. In 1995 a Taiwanese-led investor renamed it Subic Bay Golf and Country Club, expanded it to 18 holes and commissioned British-born American architect Desmond Muirhead. Subic Smart Community Corporation began a further redevelopment in 2016, and the course entered its present Subic International chapter in 2019.
Did You Know? The club’s tourism description says each hole can have four or five tee grounds, while the greens use five panels of grass rather than the more usual single or two-panel construction. That gives the course unusual flexibility in how it presents a hole. It also helps explain why the same forest setting can produce very different rounds depending on the chosen tees, wind and pin positions.
