Overview: The Lake and Mountain combination at Stratton Mountain Golf Club represents two of the resort’s three nine-hole tracks, designed by Geoffrey Cornish in the southern Vermont mountains. The ranked 18-hole routing combines open mountain views with wooded corridors, changing elevation and the strategic variety that comes from playing two distinct nines. Its 6,800-yard, par-72 scale gives the course a substantial resort profile, while the separate Forest nine means the property can create different 18-hole combinations across the 27-hole facility.
History: Stratton’s original course opened for play in 1964, helping make the ski resort a year-round destination. Cornish designed the first 18 holes, now represented by the Lake and Mountain nines, and the Forest nine was added later with Brian Silva involved in its design. The property has also hosted six LPGA Tour events, including the Stratton Mountain LPGA Classic, which began in 1990 as Vermont’s first professional golf event.
Did You Know? Cornish included the Mountain fifth hole in his personal Dream 18, according to Stratton’s history of the course. It is a small architectural detail, but it shows why the resort’s golf identity is tied to the land’s movement and not just to the size of its 27-hole operation.
