Overview: Stowe Mountain Club is an 18-hole Bob Cupp design on the lower slopes of Mount Mansfield and Spruce Peak. The course uses the movement of the Vermont mountain land rather than flattening it into a conventional resort grid, so the round is defined by changing elevation, wooded corridors and sudden openings toward the peaks. At 6,411 yards and par 72, it is not a brute-length course. Its character comes from the need to read uneven lies, choose conservative landing areas and manage the transition between forest and open hillside.
History: The course opened in 2007 as part of Stowe Mountain Resort’s expansion into four-season recreation. It was planned alongside the resort’s lodging and mountain facilities, and its creation added an 18-hole course to a destination already known for winter sport. Stowe Mountain Club now sits within a 36-hole golf offering that also includes the older Stowe Country Club, whose course predates the mountain club.
Did You Know? Stowe Mountain Club became the first Vermont course and the third New England course to receive Audubon International Signature Sanctuary status, according to the Vermont Golf Course Superintendents Association. That recognition reflects the course’s environmental work as well as its setting, where the design has to coexist with mountain forests, water and wildlife.
