Overview: Stockbridge Golf Club is a private Berkshire course along the Housatonic River in Stockbridge. The current course tour lists 6,655 yards and par 71, but the layout’s appeal is not based on length. Flat river meadows, close water and a compact traditional routing make accuracy important on many holes, while the surrounding Berkshire Hills provide a calm landscape beyond the fairways. The course remains intimate and walkable, with a character shaped by gradual development rather than a single grand construction project.
History: Golf reached Stockbridge in 1894 through Joseph H. Choate Jr. and Eliot Tuckerman, and the club was formally founded on September 26, 1895. A second nine was added in 1900. In 1931, the club purchased 32 acres from James L. Karrick and laid out a new course using six holes on that tract; the 1934 work established the routing that has remained essentially the same since then. The official club history does not identify a professional golf architect, so that field is intentionally left blank.
Did You Know? Stockbridge’s Men’s Invitational began in 1897 and the club describes it as arguably the oldest invitational tournament in the country. The event began when the course was still a collection of meadow holes and continued through the later 1931–1934 rebuilding. That long-running competition is a useful reminder that Stockbridge’s identity is as much about enduring traditions as about its measured river setting.
