Overview: Sterling Grove Golf & Country Club is an 18-hole Nicklaus Design course in Surprise, in the West Valley of metropolitan Phoenix. The club presents a par-72 layout with rolling greens, wide landing areas, tree-lined fairways and irrigation ponds, a deliberate change from the exposed desert style found on many Arizona courses. A current scorecard record lists 6,636 yards from the black tees. The course is now centred on club membership and member guests, so it belongs in a destination guide as a distinctive private-club option rather than as a standard daily-play course.
History: Sterling Grove opened to limited public preview play in February 2021, when Nicklaus Design described it as the first new Arizona course to open to public play since 2016. The early concept combined features inspired by classic golf architecture with more than 1,700 planned trees, rolling terrain and water. As the community matured, the operating model moved toward its intended private-club identity, while Troon management and the Nicklaus design name remained part of the course’s public profile.
Did You Know? Sterling Grove was planned as a deliberate departure from the usual Arizona palette. Its fairways run through groves and around ponds, creating a greener, more traditional landscape in the West Valley.
