Overview: Öster by Stenson is the championship course at Österåkers Golfklubb, north-east of Stockholm. Henrik Stenson Golf Design reshaped the layout around broad rolling ground, pine and hardwood woodland, bold bunker lines and large contoured greens. The setting gives the course room to move between open approaches and more enclosed holes, while the strategic challenge comes from choosing the right angle rather than simply chasing length. Elevation changes and the scale of the green complexes make the second shot especially important, and the closing stretch brings the character of the property back toward the clubhouse.
History: Österåkers Golfklubb was founded in 1988, but the ranked Öster by Stenson routing is the modern reconstruction of the former Österled course. It reopened in August 2019 after a redesign led by Henrik Stenson with Christian Lundin. The project gave the course a new identity while retaining the broad landscape and the club’s connection with championship golf in the Stockholm area.
Did You Know? Öster by Stenson was Henrik Stenson’s first major course-design project. The design brief drew inspiration from strategic championship venues, but the result remains closely tied to the rolling Swedish landscape around Åkersberga.
