Overview: Stellenbosch Golf Club is a mountain-backed parkland course at the centre of the Cape Winelands, with vineyards, old trees and the Helderberg forming the visual frame. Ken Elkin’s 18-hole layout measures about 6,388 metres from the yellow tees and plays to par 72. The fairways are generally inviting, but the course asks for exact approaches as the ground rises and the greens sit among mature vegetation.
History: Stellenbosch Golf Club celebrated its centenary in 2004, but the present 18-hole course grew from a nine-hole layout developed in 1953. Ken Elkin’s design gave the club its modern parkland foundation, which has since hosted the 1999 South African Open and five South African Masters. The club’s long history is therefore visible both in its age and in its tournament role.
Did You Know? Stellenbosch offers one of the clearest combinations of golf and wine-country geography in South Africa. The course is close enough to the town’s historic centre and vineyards that a golfer can read the round as part of the Winelands landscape rather than as a separate resort enclave.
