Overview: Steenberg is a polished Cape Town course laid through vineyards, pines, waterways and the foothills of the Constantia Valley. Peter Matkovich and Dale Hayes created a hybrid layout that moves from estate parkland to more open mountain-facing ground, with water and carefully shaped greens providing the main strategic pressure. At roughly 7,025 metres and par 72, it has the scale of a serious championship course without losing the atmosphere of the historic wine estate.
History: The course is part of Steenberg’s wider transformation from one of the Cape’s old wine farms into a modern hospitality and golf destination. Matkovich and Hayes’ design uses the estate’s agricultural geometry and natural waterways, with the vineyards and historic property remaining visible throughout the round. The golf course therefore reads as a conversation between old Cape land use and contemporary course design.
Did You Know? Steenberg’s 7th is an island green, while the 14th green is described by the club as one of the largest in Africa at about 76 metres. Those two greens create opposite kinds of challenge: one concentrates the target, the other makes distance control and three-putt avoidance part of the design.
