Overview: St Annes Old Links is a championship links on Lancashire’s Fylde coast, at the Highbury Road East address in Lytham St Annes. The 18-hole course is shaped by sandy ground, low dunes and grasses exposed to the coastal winds. Its current scorecard is par 72 and 6,907 yards, while the club describes the course as a traditional links test with a notably strong closing stretch. Wind and firm ground can change the character of holes from one day to the next, making thoughtful trajectory and ground play central to the round.
History: The club was established in 1901 on land previously used by the Lytham and St Anne’s Golf Club. George Lowe, then the local professional, helped restore golf to the vacated ground and offered to assist with laying out the course. In 1909 the club secured a long lease on land at its present location and began redesigning the course as the town expanded. These dates refer to the club’s founding and move into its current ground; the course has evolved since its original form.
Did You Know? The club’s signature ninth hole was voted the best ninth hole in Great Britain by Golf World. That distinction is especially apt on a course where exposed coastal ground and prevailing winds make the relationship between tee, fairway and green change from day to day. St Annes Old Links has also hosted Open Championship final qualifying and co-hosted The Amateur Championship with Royal Lytham & St Annes, so its story joins a memorable individual hole to a continuing role in championship golf.
