Overview: The New Course at St Andrews is a traditional Fife links with natural humps, hollows and an out-and-back routing. Its fairways and green sites sit on the same exposed linksland as the Old Course, but the layout has its own rhythm and asks for careful positioning in the wind.
History: The New Course opened for play in 1895 after demand for access to the existing St Andrews links had outgrown the available tee times. The R&A commissioned Old Tom Morris to lay out the second course, and later work, including Donald Steel’s 1988 conversion to a full championship course, helped shape the modern routing.
Did You Know? The name New Course was once literal. When it opened in 1895, the older St Andrews layout became known as the Old Course, giving the most famous course on the Links its familiar name.
