Overview: The Strathtyrum Course is one of the seven public courses at St Andrews Links. It opened in 1993 and measures about 5,620 yards, with the men’s card listed at par 66. The course uses links ground, breeze and firm running surfaces to create a shorter round that still requires accurate iron play and thoughtful choices around the greens. Donald Steel is associated with the design, and the layout offers a quieter alternative to the Old Course while remaining part of the same historic golfing destination.
History: Strathtyrum was added to the St Andrews Links complex in the early 1990s as the town’s public golf operation expanded beyond its traditional courses. The links history around St Andrews reaches back many centuries, but this exact routing is modern, opening in 1993 and designed for a different type of visitor round. Its presence helps spread play across the public estate while giving golfers a course with its own scale and rhythm rather than a replica of the Old Course.
Did You Know? The Strathtyrum is named after the nearby Strathtyrum estate and is not the same course as the Castle Course, which opened later on the opposite side of the town. Its par 66 and shorter yardage make it a useful complement to a St Andrews trip: golfers can experience links contours and wind without every round demanding championship-course length.
