Overview: Springbank Links Golf Club sits just west of Calgary, where the front nine descends through steep valleys toward Bearspaw Reservoir before the back nine opens into broader, more links-like terrain. The official scorecard lists the 18-hole course at par 71 and 6,702 yards from the longest tees. Rod Whitman’s routing makes the change between nines part of the identity: the opening holes ask for careful club selection through trees, ravines and uneven ground, while the closing stretch offers wider fairways, native fescue and a more open approach to the Rocky Mountain landscape.
History: The course’s character is defined by the way its two nines use different pieces of the Springbank setting. The official club describes holes 5, 6 and 7 as the “Devil’s Triad,” a consecutive stretch where elevation and confined lines make strategy more important than simply hitting hard. On the back nine, two lakes, two ponds and a sandstone waterfall between the 12th and 14th greens create a different visual language. Springbank is now owned and operated by the Windmill Golf Group, whose home-club model has connected the course to a wider Alberta golf network while preserving its local identity.
Did You Know? A sandstone waterfall is positioned between the 12th and 14th greens. It is more than scenery: the feature helps mark the point where Springbank’s back nine changes from the tighter, valley-shaped feel of the opening holes into wider fairways framed by silica bunkers and native fescue.
