Overview: Spring Valley Golf Club is a Melbourne Sandbelt course whose sandy ground, gentle undulations and mature vegetation support a classic strategic test. H.V. Vern Morcom designed a layout that rewards shaped tee shots and precise iron play without depending on excessive length. The championship tees extend to about 6,700 yards, but the course's character comes more from the quality of its lines, bunkers and green sites than from the number on the card.
History: The club was established in 1948 after its founders secured a new Sandbelt site, and Morcom's course was ready for play after the land was cleared and prepared. The routing has remained the foundation of the club's identity. Later work by Mike Clayton and the Ogilvy Clayton Cocking Mead group refined the holes and playing surfaces while respecting the original shape of Morcom's design.
Did You Know? Spring Valley belongs to the Morcom family story that runs through Melbourne golf. Vern was the son of Mick Morcom, whose construction work helped realise important Mackenzie designs, and Vern also worked at nearby Kingston Heath. The result is a course with a strong local design lineage rather than an imported resort identity.
