Overview: Spring Lake Golf Club is a private coastal New Jersey course whose George C. Thomas Jr. routing occupies rolling ground near the Jersey Shore. A.W. Tillinghast’s later reconstruction added another architectural layer, while the course’s open corridors, strategic green work, and shoreline setting retain the character of an early twentieth-century design.
History: The club began with a nine-hole course in 1898, believed to have been laid out by Willie Norton. After the club acquired the Thompson farm, Thomas completed the new 18-hole course in 1911; Tillinghast then led a substantial reconstruction in 1918.
Did You Know? Spring Lake was George Thomas’s only New Jersey project and his last East Coast course. He later became associated with Riviera, Bel-Air, and Los Angeles Country Club in California, making this Jersey Shore layout an unusually early chapter in his career.
