Overview: Spring Brook Country Club is a private 18-hole parkland course in Morristown, New Jersey, built across the former Spring Brook Farm of the Foote estate. The club’s current hole-by-hole card supports a par-72 routing with the black markers totaling about 6,613 yards, although individual holes can change par by tee setup. Armstrong Pond, mature woodland, rolling ground and a sequence of elevated or water-guarded putting surfaces shape the character of the round. The course rewards accurate positioning, especially on the stretch around the pond known inside the club as The Gauntlet.
History: Spring Brook was incorporated on June 1, 1921, and the course formally opened for play on July 4, 1922. Club research later confirmed that Walter Travis visited the Foote estate, surveyed the ground and laid out the original design, resolving a long-running question about his role. The course has since evolved through work by Hal Purdy and a substantial 2000 renovation by Ken Dye, but the location and sequence of the holes remain intact. Spring Brook has hosted New Jersey State Open, State Amateur, Metropolitan Golf Association and New Jersey PGA championships, giving the private club a significant competitive history.
Did You Know? The Gauntlet is a run of three consecutive par-three holes around Armstrong Pond. The club’s history records Sam Snead and Gary Player giving exhibitions over the pond, turning that already distinctive stretch into part of Spring Brook folklore.
