Overview: At Spey Valley, the mixed profile for Spey Valley is listed at 7153 yards and par 72. Dave Thomas routed the course through ancient Caledonian pine forest and along the River Spey, creating a mixed landscape of woodland, open valley ground and water-edge views. The long layout offers different scales of hole: some fairways invite a full drive across open ground, while others ask for control as the river, trees or natural contours influence the line. The Highland setting gives the course a strong sense of space, but the strategic questions remain close to the ground in the lies and approaches.
History: The Macdonald Spey Valley Championship Course opened in July 2006 as part of the Aviemore resort area. Thomas was responsible for the design, and the course quickly became known for combining a modern championship scale with the natural features of the River Spey and the surrounding pinewoods. The official course information presents multiple tee lengths, allowing the routing to play as a demanding tournament course or a more moderate test while preserving the same landscape and sequence of holes.
Did You Know? The course follows the River Spey through a landscape of ancient Caledonian pine forest. That combination gives Spey Valley two very different visual identities in one round: enclosed woodland holes and broad Highland views where the river becomes the dominant reference point.
