Overview: Its 18-hole parkland routing plays to par 72 from the championship tees in Pimville, with championship tees measuring 6,884 metres. The layout gives the round a clear sense of place: fairways and greens sit within one of Johannesburg’s most historically important townships, and the course serves both serious golf and a wider community role. Its long par card, established tree cover, and changing tee angles reward a player who keeps the ball in position rather than relying on one aggressive strategy.
History: The club was established in 1974, growing from the Pimville golf tradition and the earlier sand-green course. Grass greens were introduced in 1980, and Gary Player was involved in a major refurbishment announced in 2018. Those stages are kept separate here: the club’s origin is earlier than the Player-led improvements, and the current course is the result of a long local development rather than a single design event.
Did You Know? Soweto Country Club has been described as the only golf course located inside the township. Its significance is therefore both sporting and social. The course has hosted major local events, including the Joburg Ladies Open, while continuing to function as a community-facing place where the geography of Soweto is part of the golf experience.
