Overview: Southwood is an upscale public 18-hole course in Tallahassee, designed by Fred Couples and Gene Bates. The layout opened to a par 72 and about 7,172 yards, moving through rolling hills, pastureland and ancient live oaks. Its scale and natural setting give the public course a substantial championship feel without changing its visitor access.
History: Southwood opened in November 2002 and quickly became one of the notable new-course projects in Florida. Couples supplied the design identity while Bates handled the architectural work, and the course has continued as a public facility serving Tallahassee golfers and visiting players.
Did You Know? Southwood is built around the idea of golf in a former pastoral landscape, with the ancient oaks and open pasture corridors doing much of the visual work. The result is a course that feels more spacious and varied than a typical urban public layout.
