Overview: Southward Ho Country Club is a private A.W. Tillinghast course in Bay Shore, New York. The par-71 layout occupies Long Island’s South Shore and uses a classic private-club scale, with strategic hazards and a traditional routing that rewards controlled placement. Its history and identity are inseparable from the original Tillinghast course built for the club.
History: The club formed in 1923 when a group of Brooklyn and Manhattan summer residents purchased 140 acres near Bay Shore. Tillinghast designed and built the championship course, which opened late in 1923. After the Depression forced a reorganization as South Bay Golf Club, members eventually regained the property and restored the Southward Ho name in 1955.
Did You Know? The club borrowed its name from the famous 12th hole at Carnoustie Golf Links in Scotland. A windmill that still stands beside the tenth hole has become another visible link between the property’s old estate history and its golf identity.
