Overview: Southern Trace Country Club occupies a varied 620-acre setting in south Shreveport, where open meadows, pine valleys and dense oak forest give the course a changing visual rhythm. Arthur Hills designed the 18-hole layout to use those transitions, creating a parkland course that alternates between more open approaches and tree-lined corridors. The routing is strategic rather than one-dimensional: water, bunkers, tree lines and the shape of the landing areas influence how a player chooses to attack. At 7,048 yards from the back markers, Southern Trace offers championship scale while retaining the quieter character of a course integrated into a residential landscape.
History: Southern Trace opened in 1988 as the golf centre of a planned community in Shreveport. Its original design was by Arthur Hills, whose work is recorded in the architect’s original-course list for that year. The club later undertook a significant renovation led by Jim Lipe, completed in 2020. That work updated the course while respecting its established relationship with the open meadows, pine land and oak forest. Southern Trace has also hosted professional and amateur events, adding a competitive history to the club’s role as a private community course.
Did You Know? Southern Trace’s landscape changes from open meadow to dense oak forest within the same round. That contrast is more than a scenic detail: it creates different light, sightlines and wind exposures as the routing turns through the property.
