Overview: Southbroom is a compact coastal parkland course on KwaZulu-Natal’s South Coast, where indigenous bush, water and ocean air shape a classic seaside round. The 18-hole layout measures about 5,509 metres at par 72, but the short scorecard does not remove the need for accuracy: several fairways narrow near the green and the wind can turn a straightforward approach into a low, running shot.
History: The first nine holes were laid out in 1938 under J. Naven, then extended to 18 holes in 1948 under A. L. Mandy; club history records the full course opening in 1954. That sequence is important because Southbroom is not a new resort creation. It is a local course whose present identity grew in stages from a small coastal beginning.
Did You Know? The course is known for wildlife as much as golf. Monkeys and other indigenous animals can appear around the fairways, while the 4th hole’s coastal setting gives one of the clearest reminders that Southbroom is being played on a narrow strip between forest and sea.
