Overview: Somerset West Golf Club sits beneath the Helderberg in the Cape Winelands, with vineyards, mountain slopes and the broad Somerset West plain shaping the views. The course is an 18-hole parkland round that combines established corridors with newer holes, giving the layout a blend of mature trees and more open modern shaping. Its position makes it a natural link between Cape Town’s southern suburbs, Stellenbosch and the False Bay coast.
History: The club has recently gone through a substantial redesign, with Peter Matkovich assisting and ten new holes opening in February 2018. That work refreshed the routing without erasing the identity of the long-standing local club. The result is a course whose history is visible in the contrast between older vegetation and the newer fairway and green complexes.
Did You Know? Somerset West’s mountain backdrop changes the visual scale of the course from hole to hole. The Helderberg can sit behind a green as a precise target or rise above a wide landing area, making the same Winelands geography feel intimate on one hole and expansive on the next.
