Overview: Sishen Golf Club is an 18-hole Robert Grimsdell design in Kathu, Northern Cape, where lush fairways run through a dry landscape of camel-thorn trees and Kalahari-edge bushveld. The par-72 course uses the contrast between green turf and arid surroundings as a strategic feature: trees can narrow the line, water is valuable, and the fairways demand more thought than the open landscape initially suggests. The target record lists the course at 6,400 yards. Its strongest identity comes from the mature trees and the way the routing creates a surprisingly rich golf environment around the mining town.
History: Sishen was built and maintained by the Sishen Iron Ore mine and officially opened in 1979. It was the last course designed by Robert, or Bob, Grimsdell, who did not live to see the project completed. The club developed into a community hub as well as a golf course, and its tournament history includes the Sishen Classic and other Northern Cape events. The course's reputation rests on the contrast between its industrial origin, its careful turf and its indigenous setting.
Did You Know? The camel-thorn trees can stand directly in the line of play and act as aerial hazards. Sishen therefore asks players to read the height and shape of the trees as carefully as the fairway width, a distinctive challenge in an otherwise open-looking landscape.
